We are announcing a new direction for the Scientific Today platform - a shift towards an automated scientific RSS feed reader.
We originally developed Scientific Today to help scientific research organisation improve their communication with the public. We calculated outreach scores and created outreach reports ranking organisations based on this score. Back then, we called the platform Science Simplified.
We quickly abandoned this concept due to a general lack of interest in the community. We renamed the platform to Scientific Today and temporarily turned it into a simple science news platform.
Now, we are moving forward with the development of the platform. The goal for Scientific Today is to become a scientific RSS feed aggregator. While articles can still be manually published, the main focus is on automated import of content from various RSS sources. Here are the most important recent changes:
- different types of content can now be imported, including scientific events and job announcements;
- node (country, city, organisation) following is no longer available; instead, you can now follow feeds
- discipline following is no longer available; instead, you can now define keywords you are interested in
Node following is a concept we will continue using in our other projects, like Life Science Network or Science HR. But for Scientific Today it is no longer required.
We tested keyword following in our Abstream application. We believe it is a better and more flexible system when compared to a small number of disciplines and decided to apply it to Scientific Today as well.
Visit your Stream page and set up your stream to continue getting notifications when new content matching your interests is published.
Also, consider submitting RSS feeds you would like to follow to our database. If you are a publisher of scientific content, you can also submit your RSS feed or send it to us, and we will add it for you.
