Peptide therapeutics, including insulin and GLP-1 agonists, are rapidly growing but costly to manufacture, primarily due to reliance on chromatography. Crystallization or precipitation offers a lower-cost alternative, yet process development is challenging due to complex, poorly understood biomolecular phase transitions.
This project involves developing a liter-scale precipitation platform covering the full downstream process: precipitation, solid–liquid separation (centrifugation/filtration), and re-dissolution. Real-time image-based monitoring of particle size enables process control and optimization. Work begins with model peptides and progresses to pharmaceutically relevant compounds.
The project is integrated with two PhD studies: multi-scale modeling of phase transitions and droplet microfluidic characterization. Together, they span scales from nanoliters to liters, linking molecular mechanisms to industrial process design.
