Job Summary The Health Promotion and Mental Health Prevention Manager provides leadership for the planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of the Caltech Prevention Ecosystem, a comprehensive, student-focused prevention initiative designed to improve student mental health, prevent substance use, reduce suicide risk, and strengthen student well-being through evidence-informed prevention strategies. As a member of the Student Wellness Services leadership team, the Health Promotion and Mental Health Prevention Manager serves as the primary coordinator for student-focused prevention initiatives across the Institute and works collaboratively with Student Wellness Services, the Center for Student Success, Student & Family Engagement, Athletics, Recreation & Instruction, Academic Affairs, Institutional Research, Communications and External Relations, faculty, students, and campus partners. The position advances a public health approach to student well-being by integrating prevention, education, early identification, community engagement, and continuous quality improvement throughout the student experience. The Health Promotion and Mental Health Prevention Manager develops institutional capacity for prevention and serves as the central coordinator for implementation of the Caltech Prevention Ecosystem. The successful candidate will demonstrate an appreciation for the unique culture of a science- and technology-focused education and research institution and a commitment to supporting a diverse student community through collaboration, innovation, and evidence-informed practice. This is an Organizational Critical position. In the event of an emergency on campus, an employee designated as organizational critical is expected to report to Campus as soon as possible to assist in division/department response and recovery efforts. Essential Job Duties Campus Prevention Leadership Coordinate implementation of the Caltech Prevention Ecosystem across the Institute. Develop and execute an annual campus prevention plan aligned with the Student Life Strategic Framework and project goals. Lead initiatives focused on student mental health promotion, suicide prevention, substance use prevention, resilience, and healthy help-seeking behaviors. Promote a coordinated, public health approach to student well-being through collaboration with campus partners. Identify emerging prevention needs and recommend evidence-informed strategies to strengthen institutional capacity. Education, Training, and Outreach Lead student-focused prevention education and outreach for undergraduate and graduate students, with targeted engagement of faculty, staff, and families when their role supports student prevention, early identification, referral, or well-being. Implement evidence-informed prevention trainings tailored to Caltech’s student population including suicide prevention, mental health awareness, substance use prevention, and behavioral health literacy initiatives. Collaborate with campus partners to integrate prevention into existing programming such as New Student Orientation, graduate student onboarding, Family Weekend, residence life programming, student leadership development, and campus wellness initiatives while also working to develop new offerings Develop educational materials and toolkits that increase awareness of campus resources and encourage early help-seeking. Student Engagement and Peer Programs Coordinate peer education and peer leadership initiatives that promote student well-being. Partner with Student & Family Engagement, undergraduate and graduate student government and student organizations to expand wellness programming throughout the student experience. Support the development of student-led prevention initiatives that strengthen belonging, resilience, healthy decision-making, and community engagement. Collaborate with Athletics, Recreation & Instruction to integrate prevention messaging into recreation and wellness programming. Campus Partnerships and Communications Serve as the primary coordinator for prevention partnerships across Student Life, Student Affairs, and Academic Affairs. Convene the Prevention Advisory Group and facilitate regular cross-campus collaboration. Partner with the Office of Communications and External Relations to develop coordinated awareness campaigns, digital communications, publications, and social media content that reduce stigma and promote behavioral health resources. Collaborate with faculty and staff to strengthen referral pathways and increase confidence in recognizing and responding to students of concern. Evaluation and Continuous Quality Improvement Coordinate implementation of the project's evaluation plan in partnership with the Office of Institutional Research. Monitor implementation quality, progress and alignment with project goals and milestones. Collect and analyze program participation data and SAMHSA-required performance measures. Develop quarterly performance dashboards and annual reports for leadership and campus stakeholders. Recommend program improvements based on evaluation findings and emerging student needs. Support sustainability planning by documenting outcomes, identifying effective practices, and assisting with institutional planning beyond the grant period. Collaboration The Health Promotion and Mental Health Prevention Manager works closely with: Student Wellness Services Center for Student Success CARE Team and Caltech Accessibility Services (CASS) Student & Family Engagement which encompasses First-Year Experience, Residential Experience, Student Engagement, and Family Programs Athletics, Recreation & Instruction Academic Affairs Staff and Faculty Consultation Center Office of Communications and External Relations Office of Institutional Research Student organizations and peer leaders Community behavioral health providers Basic Qualifications Master's degree in Higher Education, Public Health, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Health Promotion, Student Affairs Administration, or a related field. Minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in higher education, behavioral health prevention, health promotion, wellness education, public health, student affairs, or a related field. Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, or evaluating prevention, health promotion, or student wellness initiatives. Experience developing and delivering educational workshops, trainings, or outreach programs for diverse audiences. Strong project management, organizational, and collaboration skills. Excellent written, verbal, facilitation, and presentation skills. Ability to build collaborative partnerships across academic and administrative units. Preferred Qualifications Five or more years of experience in higher education or college student mental health prevention. Experience with suicide prevention, behavioral health promotion, substance use prevention, or public health initiatives. Experience coordinating cross-functional institutional projects. Experience fostering integrated systems of care and prevention through collaboration across health, mental health, and student support services. Familiarity with SAMHSA, JED Campus, Healthy Minds Study, ACHA-NCHA, or other national college mental health initiatives. Experience collecting, analyzing, and reporting program evaluation data. Experience supervising student employees, peer educators, or graduate assistants. Appreciation for the culture and priorities of a science- and technology-focused research university.
