Real differences may drive polarization, not misperception

Many social scientists have theorized that partisan animosity in America stems from a mutual exaggeration of the other side’s extremism. But a new Yale-led study found that Democrats and Republicans often make the same mistakes about their own parties, suggesting polarization may be rooted in genuine disagreement over policy.
