Although she was never employed by DESY, the research centre was her scientific home: DESY mourns the loss of Ada Yonath, winner of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, who passed away on 31 August at the age of 87. “With Ada Yonath’s passing, we have lost an outstanding researcher, renowned for her groundbreaking work on elucidating the structure of the ribosome,” says Beate Heinemann, Chairperson of the DESY Board of Directors. “In doing so, she not only revolutionised molecular biology but also paved the way for new approaches in medicine – particularly in the development of antibiotics. We will remember Ada Yonath not only as an inspiring and dedicated scientist, but also for her down-to-earth nature and warmth.”
