Innovation, education and international efforts to address the climate and biodiversity crises will form the bulk of the University's events across LCAW before a Research Showcase finale on Friday that shines a spotlight on the work of more than 140 Cambridge researchers with lightning talks, posters and exhibition stands.
On Monday, the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability (CISL), Innovate Cambridge, Cleantech for UK and Cambridge Zero kick off with a Climate Innovation Forum.
The Forum will be a high-level discussion on how place-based ecosystems can unlock investment, accelerate commercialisation and support the UK’s industrial strategy, and is the first in a series of CISL London Climate Action Week events.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education and Environmental Sustainability Professor Bhaskar Vira hosts a private screening on Monday of two episodes from his documentary television series Embers of Hope for Cambridge students and staff.
Midweek, Cambridge Zero Director Professor Emily Shuckburgh CBE (Chief Scientific Advisor to the UK Government), joins Professor Vira and Türkiye’s Ambassador to the UK alongside the country's COP31 President for Education, Skills and the Circular Economy: An Action-Oriented Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue at the Turkish Embassy in London on Wednesday.
This high-level dialogue will bring together senior representatives from government, universities, education systems, industry and the international climate process to explore how education, skills and institutional partnerships can support the transition to circular, low-carbon and zero-waste economies.
Save the Children International, the University of Cambridge, Cambridge Partnership for Education and Cambridge Zero will host a roundtable on Thursday, bringing together partners from across climate and education to explore climate justice, community resilience, and climate-resilient education systems.
Also on Thursday, Professor Shuckburgh, Cambridge University Press & Assessment and Cambridge Zero host an evening to build connections and inspire innovation in children’s education as part of celebrations for Thriving Sustainably on Planet Earth, a new book published by Cambridge University Press.
Co-edited by Professor Shuckburgh, Dr James Biddulph and Dr Harry Pearse, Thriving Sustainably on Planet Earth is part of a new series entitled Education Visions. The book presents a number of academic manifestos and responses to them by education practitioners.
Finally, on Friday more than 140 researchers, including senior academics from all six Cambridge Schools will present their work at the inaugural Cambridge Climate & Nature Research Showcase at the Cavendish Laboratory's new Ray Dolby Centre.
Professor Vira and Cambridge University Development and Alumni Relations will launch a new fundraising narrative for environmental sustainability and Head of Public Engagement Lucy Spokes will award impact prizes to researchers. The day will feature a methane workshop, free networking lunch and drinks.
The Showcase is an exclusive London Climate Action Week event for Cambridge staff and students. It concludes with a public lecture and fireside chat on Planetary Health, featuring Professor Tan Sri Dr Jemilah Mahmood, Executive Director of the Sunway Centre for Planetary Health at Sunway University in Malaysia.
Professor Mahmood will be joined after her talk by Professor Shuckburgh and Professor Vira for a fireside chat and audience questions.
