Research Assistant (Fixed Term - 10 months)

Job Created on 10 Jun 2026 University of Cambridge

We are looking to appoint a Research Assistant to support projects that improve vaccine and atypical vaccine design.

The post-holder will use and develop expertise in the flow cytometric identification of antigen-specific B cells, supporting single-cell RNA sequencing analysis of these cells, and the cloning, validation and characterisation of B-cell receptors (BCRs). Where required, the role may also support the establishment of VHH library screening against target immunogens. The current priority is the design, testing and characterisation of small-molecule-directed immunotherapies, with a particular focus on immune responses directed towards xenobiotic small molecules of concern to patient health, such as pesticides. Hosted between the MRC Toxicology Unit and the Department of Biochemistry, the project draws on synthetic chemistry, biochemistry, immunology and toxicology. The post-holder will assist with relevant experiments, including immunotherapy design, manufacture and assessment in vitro and in vivo. As the project develops, there may be opportunities to contribute to more independent academic design and ownership of defined sub-projects.

Candidates will require a degree in a relevant biological science and a demonstrated interest in small-molecule-focused immunology, vaccine research and the mechanisms underlying immune responses. Experience of performing and interpreting results from multicolour or spectral flow cytometry is essential, together with designing and conducting biochemical assays such as ELISA. Experience of tissue processing and sample preparation from murine models; bioinformatic analysis of large biological datasets; experience with common molecular biology wet lab techniques and of handling and interpreting high-dimensional biological datasets is required.

This position is funded by the Wellcome Trust and fixed term for 10 months.
