Research Assistant (Fixed Term)

Job Created on 01 Jun 2026 University of Cambridge

The Medical Research Council Mitochondrial Biology Unit (MRC MBU), University of Cambridge, wishes to appoint a Research Assistant to join Prof. Edmund Kinji's group.

A world-renowned centre for research, the MRC MBU is a vibrant community focused on the involvement of mitochondria and their dysfunction in an ever-increasing range of human diseases. Additional information can be found at www.mrc-mbu.cam.ac.uk.

The Mitochondrial Carriers group investigates how mitochondrial transport processes contribute to cellular homeostasis and how dysfunction of mitochondrial transport steps lead to disease. A key focus is on Citrin Deficiency (CD), a complex metabolic disorder caused by the absence of dysfunction of the mitochondrial aspartate/glutamate carrier (AGC2 or citrin). Our group uses cellular and murine models to uncover the metabolic consequences of CD, aiming to develop new therapeutic strategies. This post is funded by the Citrin Foundation (https://citrinfoundation.org).

This is a fixed-term position available until 31 May 2028. We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, well-organised person, who will provide general laboratory support, as well as technical support for breading and management of murine models of Citrin Deficiency, and for mammalian cell culture. The post-holder will contribute to a range of molecular, cellular and organismal assays. Attention to detail and meticulous recordkeeping are key elements for this position.

The applicant must be a graduate (BSc/MPhil) in a biomedical scientific subject and have prior practical laboratory experience. Experience in handling animal models would be key, while experience in basic molecular biology techniques is desirable. Applicants should include a CV and cover letter detailing why they are suitable for the position and their experience, along with contact information for three professional referees who can be contacted prior to interview.

Informal enquiries about this position should be directed to Dr Sotiria Tavoulari ([email protected]).
